A chance encounter with a book on self-hypnosis at the local library aged 14 has led to a life-long fascination with the power of both the imagination and the subconscious mind.
Wanting to understand “how it all worked”, Susan gained a Masters degree in Biochemistry from Oxford University, specialising in Neuroscience, in 1999 and began training in Clinical Hypnosis in 2001 with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH).
Susan qualified to Diploma level in 2003 and began her clinical practice in South Shields in 2004. In 2007, she gained the Practitioner Diploma.
Alongside therapy work, Susan has a passion for teaching and qualified as a Secondary Science teacher in 2005. She went on to teach Biology and Chemistry in a variety of educational settings, incorporating imaginative ways to help students retain and retrieve information.
Susan has managed successful clinical practices in both the north and the south of the UK, has spent time tutoring for the LCCH and has developed and taught her own masterclass in “Hypno-Learning”, incorporating her skills as a Science teacher.
In 2023, Susan became a certified Havening Techniques TM practitioner, enabling her to help clients to effectively process past traumatic events which are “stuck” and affecting life in the present. This led to the development of the funded “Get back to You!” trauma therapy program in South Tyneside, delivered through her Community Interest Company “True Connection NE CIC”.
Susan is a full member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis, holds an enhanced DBS and is fully insured.
Now based back in her home town of South Shields, Susan practises from a beautiful and peaceful space in the Westoe area, as well as online via Zoom.
Therapies
Susan prefers to utilise a Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) approach and firmly believes that all the resources we need for positive change are to be found within each of us.
See below for a list of some of the techniques which Susan can offer within this context:
Havening Technique (amygdala depotentiation therapy) helps to re-process negative memories of traumatic events which have not been processed effectively. Unprocessed events can contribute to a range of symptoms, such as flashbacks, panic attacks and phobias. Havening also helps to “clear out” negative emotions from past events which may be underlying contributing factors to unwanted habits / addictions. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) helps to reduce anxiety and deal with negative emotions or memories. It involves tapping a series of “pressure points” on the face and body and is a great technique to learn for yourself!
Past Life Regression can help a person to gain insight into issues arising in the here and now. The idea of “past lives” may not fit into the belief system of the client, or the hypnotherapist, but can still offer valuable perspectives into ongoing symptoms.
Inner Child work under hypnosis can help to process childhood trauma which has caused symptoms in the present; healing the inner child through fulfilling unmet needs can help the adult person to release unhelpful thoughts, anxieties and behaviours.
Parts Therapy involves recognising dissociated “parts” of the self which have been “pushed away” and “ignored” at some time in the past, causing a wide variety of symptoms in the present, such as feeling “stuck” or recurring internal conflicts. Parts therapy under hypnosis uses the subconscious mind to bridge the communication gap between the dissociated “part” and the client, helping to resolve unfulfilled needs and thus bringing the part back “home” into the self.
